Falconry is thought to be the oldest sport known to man with the earliest records dating as far back as 680 BC where the Chinese first describe the art. It is believed that the Romans learned Falconry from the Greeks in 400 BC helping to spread this historic sport across Europe.
Known as the ‘Sport of Kings’, falconry has historically been regarded as a status symbol and practiced by nobles of medieval Europe and feudal Japan.
Traditionally the birds used in falconry include; Osprey, Sea Eagles, True Eagles, Buzzards, Harris Hawk, True Hawks, Falcons and even Owls.
Falconry is still as popular today as ever; thanks to displays at shows and fairs across the country and the use of falcons for hunting and wildlife management. There is even a peregrine falcon called Calisto who performs an extremely important duty for all tennis fans; scaring the pigeons off Centre Court at Wimbledon!
